Dead Reckoning
Letters to Emma on how to reckon a position without a fix. Seven letters, one term of the navigator's working in each.
What just got cheap, whose old pain was it priced into, and how do you hold a course when the record can't tell you when the tide turns?
Letter one · the known position
The Last Fix
Who came out ahead the last times something turned cheap, and why that tells you where to look, not when.
The money that built mostly didn't get the gain, the users most plausibly did, and the profit sat at the point of passage.
Know your last fix, and know it is behind you.
Letter two · the speed term
Speed Made Good
A price tag is speed through the water. The finished job, with your own hours in it, is speed made good.
List prices fell. The finished job isn't priced in the record, so its cost here is reckoned, with the assumptions shown.
Don't take speed through the water for speed made good.
Letter three · the one choice that’s yours
Heading
Cheap tools reach the pain nobody was paying to fix. Ask whose pain it is before you choose a heading.
Buyers already paying got the cheap tier from the seller they already paid: a pattern across cases, not a measurement.
Ask whose pain it is, and who already holds the purse.
Letter four · the currents
Set and Drift
The water you build in belongs to someone else. Its owners post their terms, and can change or end them.
Control is posted, dated and upheld in court records. What that control is worth isn't measured.
Your heading is yours. The water belongs to someone else.
Letter five · time
Slack Water
No chart we have gives the hour a shift turns, and scored forecasts have made poor clocks.
The framework built for the turn declines a clock, and the timing calls that could be scored are few and picked.
Timing isn't forecast. It's survived.
Letter six · the landfall term
Landing and Keeping
A sale is a real landing. What you're paid in, and who holds the thing afterwards, decide what you keep.
The clearest price the record puts on a small maker's work is a sale. Who kept anything afterwards isn't shown.
Making land and keeping the cargo are two different voyages.
Letter seven · the error, stated honestly
The Cone
The method turned on my own trade: dated reckonings of which parts of a developer's paid hour still hold a price.
The cone is tight around the tools and widest at deciding what to build. All thirty-one reckonings are dated, to be scored.
Draw the cone honestly, and keep the watch.
